If I had to describe my interior design aesthetic in one word, it would be cozy.
Some people might call my home “sad beige,” but honestly? I’ve come to believe that less is more when it comes to creating a calming space. Neutral tones and earthy materials give me a simple foundation that feels peaceful, timeless, and easy to live in.
When your home is full of chaos (hello, kids), having a space that feels calm and grounded makes a huge difference.
Over the years I’ve realized that creating a cozy home isn’t about expensive furniture or perfectly styled shelves — it’s really about small details that shape how a space feels.
Here are a few of my favorite ways to create that cozy atmosphere in our home.

Mood Lighting
If there’s a corner where I can add a cute ambient light, you can bet your ass I’m going to.
Soft lighting instantly makes a space feel warmer and more inviting. We even have lighting set up behind our TVs to create a subtle glow in the evenings.
One of my favorite tricks is using smart lighting throughout the house.
Pro Tip
Use smart bulbs like Philips Hue that allow you to fully customize color, brightness, and schedules.
We have most of our lamps and accent lights connected to our Philips Hue system, which syncs directly with Apple HomeKit. That means I can control nearly every light in our home through the Home app or even from widgets on my iPhone.
It’s one of those small upgrades that makes a surprisingly big difference — especially when you want to quickly set the mood for the evening.
Rich Textures
Since my color palette leans neutral, I love incorporating different textures throughout the house to keep things visually interesting.
Think cozy layers like:
chunky cable knit blankets
faux fur throws
woven chenille pillows
textured curtains
These kinds of details add depth and warmth without making the space feel busy or overwhelming.
Texture is one of the easiest ways to make a room feel soft, layered, and lived-in.
Black & White Framed Photos
I’ve always loved art (I did major in fine arts, after all), but I have a special appreciation for classic black and white photography.
There’s something about it that feels incredibly clean and minimal, while still being impactful.
Most of the prints in our home are personal to us — engagement photos, maternity and newborn sessions, family shoots — but I also love collecting prints from different places we’ve visited or moments throughout our life.
It’s a simple way to make a house feel personal and meaningful without overwhelming the space.
Earthy Tones & Natural Materials
What one person calls “sad beige” is honestly my personal oasis.
I naturally gravitate toward a palette of:
creams
soft whites
warm grays
paired with earthy materials like:
wood
wicker
linen
concrete
These combinations make a space feel grounded and organic, which helps create that cozy, relaxed environment I’m always chasing.
Candle Warmers
I love candles, but I’m also slightly paranoid that I’ll forget to blow one out before leaving the house.
So when I discovered this candle warmer on Amazon, it was a total game changer.
They allow you to enjoy the scent of your favorite candle while also giving off a warm, cozy glow — without an open flame.
I keep mine on the kitchen counter and turn it on every morning while I’m making coffee.
Right now I’m obsessed with the scent “Vanilla Era” by Boy Bye, which makes the entire kitchen smell incredible.
Battery-Operated Candles (With Timers)
Another cozy detail I love adding throughout the house is battery-operated candles.
I have them tucked into lanterns near our front door and placed inside hurricane glasses on our dining table.
Many of them have built-in timers, which means they automatically turn on in the evenings and create that soft ambient glow without me having to think about it.
It’s a super simple trick that makes the house feel instantly more inviting.
Tucked-Away Storage Solutions
If there’s one thing motherhood has taught me, it’s that children somehow accumulate five million toys overnight.
You can try your best to buy only the aesthetically pleasing toys, but eventually your living room will still end up looking like a rainbow exploded across the floor.
And of course, those are the toys your kids love the most.
Over time I’ve learned that visual clutter really affects how calm a space feels, so I try to keep as much as possible tucked away in cabinets, baskets, or closets.
The less visual noise there is in our shared spaces, the more peaceful and cozy the house feels.
Final Thought
At the end of the day, creating a cozy home isn’t about perfectly curated decor.
It’s about building a space that feels warm, comfortable, and relaxing for the people who live there.
For me, that means soft lighting, layered textures, meaningful photos, and finding small ways to make everyday spaces feel a little more special.
And yes… occasionally embracing the chaos that comes with kids along the way.
